Eyeth/Earth

two shows only at New England Youth Theatre, 100 Flat Street, Brattleboro, Vermont.

Tickets: $5

Sign of the Times is comprised of 7 deaf and 7 hearing teenage actors. They have been rehearsing a series of short plays three times a week since May 1st at the Austine School with the aid of two interpreters. The company employs a variety of rehearsal and performance techniques to create new work for the stage including clowning, improvisation, mime, and deaf/hearing “shadow” acting.

The title “Eyeth/Earth” is taken from deaf cultural mythology. The story goes that people from Earth traveled to a nearby planet whose citizens speak only in sign language. Hence the “ear” in “earth” is replaced with an “eye” that can see signs.

The show is co-directed by NEYT founder Stephen Stearns and faculty member Jonathan Mirin. The pair plan to continue working with the troupe next fall and begin touring to area schools.

The pieces chosen for the show include “The Deaf Musicians” – a picture book written by Pete Seeger , as well as pieces written by Mirin, Stearns, and by the actors themselves, creating improvisationally.

No reservations or online sales, please.  Tickets only at the door.
