JUST SO, Mr. Kipling March 20-29
Don't miss this new interpretation of Rudyard Kipling's famous "just so" stories---created by award-winning writer and long-time NEYT director Peter Gould, and an energetic ensemble of 9 to13 year old actor/scholars!
In JUST SO, Mr. Kipling we meet Kipling's first-born child, his “best beloved” Josephine, a daughter of England, India, and Vermont, born up on Black Mountain with a view of Brattleboro and Monadnock. She was the child for whom his stories were written. Gould says, "Just So Stories” is one of those books you think you know, mostly from your own childhood memory, and then, when you pick it up as an adult, you read it and find that it is about so much more than you remembered. In our four selected tales we travel from Arabia to Africa to India, and we also witness how one man turned his love for his daughter into bedtime, nap-time, anytime stories that have lived for more than a century. Kipling took the love he felt for his first-born and the folklore he had absorbed in his world travels, put them all into these stories and then added the indescribable grief he suffered when Josephine died at the age of six.
In this new version created exclusively for NEYT and the greater community, we meet Josephine, alive again, and experience her memories of how it was to have such a story-teller for a father. We also discover how sad it was when the family fell to quarreling and how it led to the unfortunate unintended consequence of their having to leave Vermont.
In "JUST SO, Mister Kipling," you will learn how the Camel got his Hump, how the Elephant gained her Trunk, how the Rhinoceros got his Ugly Coat, and why and when King Crab played with the Sea. And you'll also learn the answer to this question: what would those four stories look like if they were all told in different, unexpected styles by a bunch of young exciting actors willing to throw themselves into new parts with a great leap of faith?
