PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE

Sponsored by Prentiss Smith & Co., Inc.

When this play premiered in New York City in 1995, critics called it a "major treat," and described it as
"poker-faced, sublime, ridiculous, smart, facile, with a serious reach!"  Now Peter Gould directs a fast-paced NEYT ensemble featuring some of our most experienced senior actors in this seventy-five minute shaggy dog story, creating a mythical--but very possible--meeting between Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein in a bohemian Parisian nightspot at the dawn of the twentieth century.

Both men stand on the edge of the great discoveries that would come to transform world views, and both yearn to be acclaimed as the MAN OF THE NEXT CENTURY by the other customers in the café, and by the world beyond. Pablo and Albert are joined in the café by a small selection of fascinating characters from the streets of Paris, and a time-traveling rock star who arrives on a mysterious mission.

Steve Martin, well known now as a film actor, is a former stand-up comic who has consistently written essays, stories, novels...and plays.  Picasso is his best--the most popular, and most produced all over the country.  The cast, under Gould's direction, has found new meaning and new physicality jumping out of the lively script.  They invite the audience to think in new ways about art and love and life while the costumes by Sandy Klein and her young apprentices create an atmosphere reminiscent of a painting by Toulouse-Lautrec.

Director Gould says, "Don't miss this play! It's a very mature direction for the Youth Theatre--challenging, witty, and memorable." Performances will be PG-14 (not for young children).
