THE MAY AWARD

New England Youth Theatre is once again accepting applications for the May Award.  Intended for the most promising graduates of NEYT and funded by an anonymous donor, this scholarship is designed to help exceptionally talented NEYT students with financial need to succeed in the theatrical arena, and to become leaders in the field.  The hope is that they will then give back to NEYT with their time, talent, and reputation, and, when able, with financial support. The intention is that NEYT become known for supporting and promoting talent, which will encourage new and promising students in the field to align themselves with NEYT.

NEYT will award one $20,000 or two $10,000 scholarships each year, assuming there are
applicants who, in the opinion of the selection committee, fulfill the criteria of the award.
The criteria for consideration for this award include, but are not limited to:
   -  talent- as observed over time in performances and classes at NEYT
   - work ethic, leadership qualities, dependability, determination, focus
            -  positive contributions to NEYT and to the larger community

The student must be a senior in high school at the time of first application, or a qualified alumnus of NEYT.  Students must be committed to attend a recognized institution in a program of professional training in the theatre arts for the following fall.  These institutions may include, but are not necessarily limited to, conservatories, theatre training programs, and schools with established theatre departments.  Consideration
may also be given to a student wishing to pursue a monitored independent curriculum.

Theatre arts is understood to include the related fields of television and film, both in front of and behind the camera, as well as the technical fields of theatre training, such as lighting, costuming, set design, directing, etc.

The application process will consist of written answers to a questionnaire, and proof of acceptance to, and
intent to enroll in, an approved course or program.  A committee of NEYT faculty and advisers will meet to review the applications, and will request interviews of selected candidates.  After these interviews, the committee will meet again to review applications, and the final decision will be announced by mail.

Scholarships may be renewable on an annual basis if applied for, and if all of the above criteria are being
met. This will require contact with candidate’s school or professional institution or conservatory to
determine that the student is indeed proceeding on the required track.

Candidates being invited to an interview will be asked to bring their current FAFSA application, if submitting one.  Otherwise, parents’ most recent tax return will be considered acceptable.

Please contact NEYT to ask for an application form.
