New England Youth Theatre’s Junior Company Embarks on a Grand Adventure with The Hobbit

BRATTLEBORO, VT – May 2025 — This spring, New England Youth Theatre’s Junior Company invites audiences of all ages on an epic journey through Middle-earth with its magical production of The Hobbit, adapted for the stage by Patricia Gray from the beloved novel by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Directed by Shannon Ward with assistant direction by Rebecca Waxman, this thrilling tale follows the unlikeliest of heroes—Bilbo Baggins—as he leaves the comfort of his hobbit hole to join the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves on a perilous quest to reclaim their treasure from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Along the way, they’ll meet trolls, goblins, elves, and a host of fantastical characters brought vividly to life on stage.

This unique production blends traditional storytelling with dynamic visual artistry, including original music composed by Riley Goodmote; handcrafted crankies, illustrated scrolls that move across the stage, created by Jana Zeller; and imaginative puppetry designed by David Regan in collaboration with NEYT’s talented technical theater students — which includes a stage-sized puppet of Smaug, an intricately constructed creature that brings Tolkien’s fearsome fire-breather to life.
